Being a Hoosier myself, I had high hopes when I clicked on that website but sadly there are none close to me. I had a wonderful pie at Epoch in Chicago a couple weeks ago. Lemon Merinque. I tend to make mine without referring to a recipe.

I like savoury pies as well, Bacon & Egg pie, Steak & Mushroom pie and so on.

I'm not overly keen on the American pot pies though, I like my savoury pies made with puff pastry.

I also am rather partial to homemade lemon meringue pie. I haven't as yet been able to find a decent store made one. Most seem to have way to much meringue on top and it's not nice and crisp. The place had a big sign out front, "World's Best Apple Pie."

Well, my grandfather loved his pie, same as yours did. So, all through the meal, which from all reports was pretty good, his mouth was watering for that "World's Best" apple pie. Finally, they finished the meal and ordered desert; apple pie, of course.

Now, my father wasn't a shrinking violet, by any means, but he had manners and worried about people's feelings. My grandfather, on the other hand...

He took one bite of the pie, got this sour look on his face, and said, in a very loud voice, "This isn't the world's best apple pie! No, sir! Not even close! Come on, Tommy, let's go!"

My grandfather stood up and started walking towards the cashier. Tommy (my dad), who had been enjoying his apple pie, suddenly felt everyone in the restaurant staring at him. He sheepishly got up, and trailed after my grandfather. Once at the cashier's, my grandfather again stated his opinion.

"That was nowhere close to the best apple pie in the world. I've half a mind to go out there and change your sign myself!"

My father just cringed.

In later years, my father would never eat anyplace with my grandfather if he spotted any sort of sign outside that said "World's Best (whatever)". Once was enough.Suldoghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07778845367184916684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1160371074353452445.post-374307518910187312008-07-10T09:00:00.000-07:002008-07-10T09:00:00.000-07:00SA - True, but a weight packing endeavor.Jeanette ...SA - True, but a weight packing endeavor.

Jeanette - I need a trip to Santa Fe and Blue Fin Bay, Minnesota sounds like just the kind of place that would harbor a perfect slice.

Mary - I understand perfectly because much of my cooking is the "fly by the seat of your pants" variety, meaning there is no recipe.

Jill - I agree, pecan is always at the top of my list. The perfect Bloody Mary? I've been working on that also. The best I found was at a little bar/restaurant in Saugatuck, Michigan. Sorry, I can't remember the name. But if I spent almost eighty dollars on a pie tin my grandmother would rise from grave!!!

About the cleanliness references. Oh my! The Farmer is in the business of fresh herbs. Food safety and cleanliness is beaten into us. Early in his career he worked for a large dairy operation. Their policy was to wash all the trucks (deliver and those large silver tankers) EVERY DAY. They had to be spotless. The thought was that even though the milk never touched the outside of the truck, the condition of the truck gave a message about cleanliness.

Heidi - Ooooh lah.
