Reindeer Games

Late yesterday afternoon I set up my booth for the Holiday Craft Fair at Marklund Home in Geneva, Illinois. If you're a local reader be sure to stop by and say hello. You can spot my booth in the back corner with a rack of aprons. I hope to see you there!

It was dark by the time I finished set-up and it was bitterly cold. Although the gauge in my car said it was 13 degrees, I can guarantee you that the wind chill was way below zero. Did I mention it was bitter cold? On my way home I drove through the town of Elburn. The business district is only about 3-1/2 blocks long. There's 1-1/2 blocks north of the railroad track and a couple blocks to the south.

Normally the sidewalks roll up at 5 p.m. I am not kidding. Many times when I drive through the town at night I tell myself that I must come back and stand in the middle of the street and take a photo. It must be seen to be believed. Last night was a very different story. There was a stinking traffic jam. Here's what happened:

(Note: The phrase "dinky little town" is a term of endearment. I don't need any terse e-mails from the Chamber of Commerce.)

Here's what lurks inside the meat market.

It's known as Ream's Elburn Market and they are among the best purveyors of meat in the state.

You know love you guys, otherwise why would I park the car behind the Catholic church and walk two blocks in -9 degree wind chill to get you a video of Santa's reindeer? I promise you, it's very exciting footage. I'm waiting for David Letterman's producers to call me. Any day now I should be getting the call.

Santa's reindeer handlers brought their most important piece of equipment.......A BIG SHOVEL!

Wish me luck at the craft show. I hate to schlep that stuff back home.

Yes, hope that you sell out! Reindeer poop? Was that you doing the shoveling? I just hope that your kids are not watching this. They might start to worry about stocking stuffers this year.

Oh, I've never doubted that you loved us!

Oh, I love Ream's. Mrs Ream was my teacher in high school. The old Mrs Ream. If I have time today I'll try to stop by the craft show.

First of all I want that meat market! They can just move here lock, stock and barrel. :) Second, love the reindeer too. What a fun thing for the kiddos to see - except for the poop of course. blessings, marlene

There is a place a few miles up one of the roads I take into Wichita that has one or more reindeer in a pen visible from the road. It's a nice, big place with trees along the front and a gated driveway. It looks like they do have a barn or stable, but it does not look like the type of place for farm animals or anything besides dogs and horses with champion bloodlines. I've always wondered what they do with that reindeer. Do they just have it for guests to see around Christmas time? The reindeer are not in the pen all the time and I wonder where they go when they aren't there. I have a *lot* of questions about those reindeer, this place, and the people that live there and own the reindeer. I guess I'm nosy.

Hee hee. I just remembered something dh had told me about that place. He said he thought it belonged to the guy who started Rent-A-Center and the Flint Hills National Golf Course and swanky subdivision. I googled and confirmed the same guy had done both these things and then looked in whitepages.com. Whaddaya know? The address matches the place with the reindeer. I told you I'm nosy. I think it's in a completely harmless way though. Gosh I love the internet!
