Monday Morning Staff Meeting

Those of you who are new to the Monday Morning Staff Meeting might not be aware of the first order of business. It's the FOOD. We certainly cannot expect to be on top of our game unless we're well fed.

This morning we will be having pecan sticky buns. Help yourself and don't worry, I have many more trays of these things.

Long time reader and 1-mile-away-as-the-crow-flies friend Mary will probably recognize these as goodies from Papa G's restaurant in nearby Elburn, Illinois.

There are plenty of napkins to go around and if need be one of my neighbors has volunteered to pass out damp washcloths for the clean up.

I'm having a red, white and blue hangover this morning so I wore my red shoes.

SHE made me do it.

Do you crochet? If not, you should probably learn. It's a very relaxing hobby and there are such wonderful things that can be created. Remember the big bag I crocheted as a Christmas gift for my daughter one year?

It was a very big bag indeed.

Or do you remember the time I crocheted the teenie-tiny sock monkey?

There are so many things you can do with crochet. I invite you to visit a great crochet site:

THE ROMAN SOCK

Be sure to check out the little Meerkats that she crocheted. Simply amazing! If you don't know how to crochet you'll certainly want to learn after seeing some of her things. I'm currently working on her free pattern for a Chicken Handbag. It will be fun to walk through the nearby land-of-the-Coach-handbags carrying the antithesis of those bags.

If you've been busy this weekend you might have missed the post about Other Mother's 89th Birthday. Scroll down and you'll see it.

It's very hot and humid here and life is slowing to a crawl. I cannot imagine what people did before air conditioning. Think back to the 1800's when women wore all that long, heavy clothing. How did they ever survive that?

What do you do to beat the heat? I'm a little old for running through the sprinkler, but that was a tried and true method back in the day. Do kids run through the sprinklers anymore? I haven't seen a kid do that in forever.

My grandmother would tell the story about how her grandparents had a home down in the bottom of a hollow (holler) near a blowing spring. I visited that spring and believe me it was totally cold air that came gushing out of that opening, along with ice cold water.

I suppose it's time for me to go and actually get something done. Summer is not my most productive time OR favorite season. Indian summer? That's a different story.

What do YOU want to talk about today? Anything on your mind?

Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to attend the meeting. I always look forward to seeing your faces!

Morning.

The bunz look fabulous. Thanks for the damp cloth, I tend to dribble.

I know how to crochet, but I much prefer knitting.

I don't go outside in this heat. I stay inside where the air is conditioned. When I didn't have air conditioning, I would make a home made swamp cooler by putting ice in a container and a fan behind it...and sit in front of that.

Not much to talk about..except the heat.

Stay cool, y'all.

Those sticky buns look wonderful! I haven't made those for years but I might have to... I love your red shoes! I am a sucker for red shoes, and have several pairs. I've been thinking about crocheting a granny square afghan for my daughter to take to college (leaving *next fall, so I've got time) and your bag has re-inspired me. Our actual temperature is supposed to be 102F here today, and the heat index will be... 107. There aren't enough sprinklers in the world to alleviate that heat.

When I was a kid and we had no air conditioning, I used to sit on the patio with my feet in a bucket of cold water. Of course, there were also many times when it was blistering hot and we'd be running around the neighborhood without a care in the world, oblivious to the heat because we had so much "to do", important stuff such as playing tag, and scrambling around on somebody's swingset. We spent plenty of time running through the sprinklers, and also playing on our Slip 'N Slide.
It never hurt to be friends with a kid who had a pool. :)
Many summer nights we spent roaming around the neighborhood doing absolutely nothing, just walking aimlessly with a couple of friends, prolonging the angst of going home and going upstairs to bed in a steamy hot bedroom.
Summer nights were a poignant mix of boredom and yet a feeling that anything was possible. Hot summer nights -- the best of times and the worst of times. Good memories of those days, and yet I am forever grateful to now have air conditioning!

I'm thinking a lot these days about mental illness and suffering because I have a sick kid.

and I remembered that you made it. That encouraged me. I love Ruby.

I'm thinking that they survived by not wearing any support panties. Those buns look great and I'm in the mood for three. Hope supplies last. Love the red shoes and am not in the least surprised that "she" made you do it! :D

You're right and they are wonderful. But my favorite at Papa G's is a bit to the right and on the bottom shelf. I LOVE their eclairs.

Love those red shoes too. Trying to decide how I can cram my size 14 feet in them.
We went to the fireworks in Walnut, IL Sunday. Sat closer than I've ever been before and got a tour of the setup and saw how they are wired, detonated. They had sky divers, woodcarvers with chain saw. The resulting artwork was auctioned off for thousand $ ish each.
And I'll pass on the pecan roll. Dinner Sunday night was a funnel cake. Spend those calories on what is really important. LOL

SO HAPPY TO SEE THOSE SHOES ON YOUR FEET!

The sticky buns...can I have 2?

Crochet is my all time handy pleasure. However, I am seriously limited in my skills:(

And 89 huh? Is that all? Seems like she should be 100;)

well friend, I ate dinner at Papa G's tonight and ate an eclair. It's all your fault you know for making met think of them. LOL

Hope that is out of my system or the diet will be shot to heck. I've lost almost 30 lbs and want to keep it up for ages.

When my oldest daughter was about 8 or 9, her Girl Scout troop attended the camp at Wichita's Cow Town. All week long we dressed in 1800s prairie dresses and worked both inside and outside doing typical chores of the day. The program is very specific about dress being authentic. Of course, that was just on the outside. No one checked to make sure we were wearing all the proper undergarments--which, of course, we did NOT. Still, I think it gave us some idea of what that would be like, and I was amazed at how much cooler it was than I had imagined. Summers here get very hot, but those long, loose skirts provided enough air flow to keep us cooler.

I once asked a man in full highland dress at a local Scottish festival what it was like to wear all that wool (great kilt, knee high socks, jacket) in the 100 degree weather. He was a large fellow to boot, and I figured he must be uncomfortable. He told me it was surprisingly comfortable and that wool works well for both keeping you warm and keeping you cool.
