found treasures

Photobucket

I don't think there's ever been a time in my life when I didn't shop for thrift items. I tagged along with my mother to hundreds of thrift and antique stores. As a freshman in high school I used my babysitting money to buy her an antique wooden bowl and chopper which she has to this day. It was a bargain, tucked under a table at her favorite thrift shop.

Pictured above is a recent find at one of Margie's estate sales. Margie buys up whole houses full of stuff and organizes them into a sale at the county fairgrounds. The wonderful thing about this silverplated server is that it has our initial engraved in the center.

I'm always impressed with the care and detail with which these pieces were created. The backside of the server is as detailed and beautiful as the front. This treasure was $5.00.

I also picked up a set of 6 embroidered cocktail napkins. These were in a zip lock bag with 8 assorted crocheted doilies. The entire lot was $3.00.

Here's something really fun that I picked up at Goodwill for $2.99. A set of four large Tiki glasses, perfect for rum punch!

RUM PUNCH

3 oz. pineapple juice
3 oz. orange juice
3 oz. lime juice
8 dashes Angostura bitters
6 oz. rum
2 oz. simple syrup

Shake ingredients with ice and serve. Makes 4 servings.

NOTE: If you live in the Chicagoland area you can attend Margie's estate sales. She advertises in the Kane County Chronicle, usually in the garage or estate sale section of the classifieds. Her ads always state "Margie's Free Coffee and Cookies" towards the bottom.

Tomorrow we'll talk about redwork pillows and lost opportunities.

I assure you it will be painless. In fact I think there might be an opportunity you won't want to miss.
