The Way Back Machine

Photobucket

The time: 1955
The place: Illinois

This young couple had to fight off the objections of both families who thought them to young to marry. She was barely 17 and he wasn't much older. Pronouncement were made concerning how young and foolish they were.

"It will never last," said someone close to the family.

But they were young and in love, and determined to make a life together. And they did.

This is my aunt and my uncle who are now married 54 years.

It reminds me of an old song, ".... it goes to show you never can tell."

P.S. The reluctant flower girl is none other than myself, in a dress sewn by my mother and a hat and basket made by my grandmother.

I love that picture. In 1955 I was ten years old. Yikes! Sometimes I wish those days would have just stayed there. I loved the fifties. Course...I was a child so maybe I didn't know all the problems that were really there.

I just wanted to pop on and say hello. I have been following your blog for a little bit now.

I'm not sure how I found it, but I'm glad I did. Thanks. I really, really like your small town photos. I love to do little road trips around here too. The small towns have a way of making me happy.

Your new friend in Washington state.

54 years...wow
I love old wedding pictures. In old wedding pictures I think you see the people and the love, and now so often I think you just see two people at a party.

Gorgeous photo! I love these timeless pictures of years past... I'm patiently awaiting the ones of my grandparents' from their weddings in the 30's and 40's.

And my, your dress is adorable - and so is the hat!

I love that they showed the world that they were all wrong. You look so sweet. I was a flower girl twice. Will have to see if I have those photos scanned yet.

What a beautiful young bride! I love the expression on her face. She seems excited about starting her new life and also very sure. Having been only 18 years when I got married, and having heard many of those objections, I'm always glad to hear the success stories of other couples who married young.

My Granma dropped out of high school to marry my Granpa before he headed off to war (WWII). She was 17, he was 19. They would have celebrated their 68th anniversary in February, but my Granpa passed away in December.

Your pictures and commentary are a joy. I'm going to have a pass on treats for our board meeting tomorrow, hopefully next week.

Awww, love it! The wedding photos from the 'good ole days' really speak to me. Of course my marriage had everything against it too...except that we also were determined. This year we will celebrate #40. He promised me a new ring. I lost the original on the farm and the diamond from the replacement. Not too good of a record, huh?

BTW, you were an adorable flower girl.
