What's an art car you ask? Wikipedia states, "An art car is a vehicle that has it's appearance modified as an act of personal artistic expression....art car artists are usually ordinary people with no artistic training who are self taught and self funded." Read more about it here.
The first time I saw an art car I was immediately drawn to the idea. I have a lifelong love of cars and an equal of love of outsider (untrained) art. There's an aspect of irreverance and fun. Our culture holds the automobile in high esteem and just the thought of gluing something on a car feels rebellious.
Soon I added "create an art car" to my bucket list of things to do before I die. Whether or not I ever actually complete one doesn't seem to bother me, because I enjoy time spent thinking about themes...."Midlife Chrysler" has already been done, but Object D'Art would be interesting, or Project Driveway.
Art cars run the gamut from the ridiculous to the sublime. One of my favorites is a car that was created by artist Rebecca Caldwell in 2000. It's called the Carthedral, a vintage hearse transformed into a gothic cathedral. Caldwell welded a Volkswagen Beetle body to the top of the hearse, giving it height and they sculpted the entire cathedral around this form. Yes, you can stand up inside.

Caldwell and her car have been to Burning Man.
And yes, she drives the Carthedral down the highway to get to Art Car Festivals and other appearances.

Okay, I don't even know if I've ever seen or been aware of such a thing. I'm afraid my idea of car art is the rusting variety found on the back forty.

Carletta - some of them are very clever. There's one that was created by a group of high school students as an art project.
