Summertime picnic

We have lots of new guests joining us today via the SITS, otherwise known as The Secret is in the Sauce. Those of you who haven't joined in the fun, take a hop over there and check it out.

Instead of just hanging out in the kitchen I thought we'd head outside and have an old fashioned picnic! People don't seem to picnic like they did when I was a kid. We didn't have the money for big excursions and theme parks didn't even exist at that time. Yeah, I know, ancient history. We made our fun by organizing a loosely planned day at a forest preserve or state park. Grab the old quilt and I'll carry the picnic basket.

Photobucket

We were all outside in the sunshine for the day and it was a good excuse to leave behind the household chores. I remember playing ball, eating, taking naps on old quilts, eating, taking hikes, eating catching fireflies at dusk and eating. The best thing about the picnics of my childhood was the "potluck element". Everyone brought their favorite family recipe, whether it be an appetizer, casserole, pie or homemade ice cream cranked in an old wooden freezer. I think I see someone cutting a pie in this photo! (For the newcomers - I'm on a lifelong quest to find the perfect piece of pie.)

Photobucket

Today we're going to gather in the back forty under the trees. There are plenty of vintage picnic baskets to hold all the food. There's a covered cake plate if someone wants to bake a cake.

I've got a special surprise - I'm giving away one of my aprons which is made from Mary Jane Butter's pattern. Don't worry if you don't win the prize because I'm going to post a tutorial next week and show you how to make one for yourself. It's made from a man's dress shirt and it's easy, I promise!

Photobucket

Just leave an comment and let me know what you'd like to bring to the vitual picnic. I'm not going to assign any categories because I hate when people do that. So what if we end up with 52 desserts? It's more fun that way. Just tell us what you're bringing. You don't need to include the recipe. The drawing will be on Sunday morning. I'll close off entries at midnight (Central Standard Time) on Saturday..... because I seriously need my beauty sleep.

Photobucket

I'm bringing Edna's Fruit Salad which is a recipe my mom has been making since the late 1950's when our neighbor Edna brought it to a picnic. Here's the recipe:

Photobucket

Omigosh, I just thought about that cherry jello dish that has pretzels in it. AHHHH...it's so delicious. Does anyone have the recipe? I'd be forever grateful.

DON'T FORGET - Subscriptions are always FREE here "At Home....." If you like what you see, please subscribe. Don't miss a minute of our exciting life here on the prairie. We're going to go out again next week and watch the corn grow. Remember what I told you, it needs to be knee high by the Fourth of July.

I absolutely love those photographs. Utterly adorable and such a lovely reminder of a bygone era.
I'm bringing the Oreo cheesecake my friend dished up at her little girl's 3rd birthday party for the grown ups. I've never seen a dessert disappear so fast! The children didn't get a sniff.

Wow - I only showed up on your site because of SITS, but now that I'm here, I can't wait to subscribe! You have a wonderful blog!

I'm probably going to be the odd man out at the virtual picnic, because I'd bring a book to read instead of food. Maybe something lite so I can read to picnicers while they munch on the yummy food!

Mmm, i would have to bring the Pioneer Woman's simply scrumtious pie. It's a raging hit whenever I take it somewhere. Hello, carmel, meet apple, inside a flaky crust? Slurp.

I can bring Cherry fluf salad - my mom made this once and the Milk Man went loopy for it!!

I'll bring some good old fashioned games. Horseshoes, badminton, croquet...maybe even a plain old ball.

I'll also bring a big basket that everyone can put their phones, iPods, and other handhelds into until it's time to leave!

Love your blog, I subscribed, thanks to SITS!

I recently found your blog and just love it. I desperately want to live in the country and so I love reading about people who do. :-)

For the picnic, I'd bring two things, Paula Deen's Squash Casserole and my grandmother's Pig Pickin Cake.

What a great blog!! I wanna subscribe! I'm gonna come back and read more when I get home from work!! Have a great weekend!!

What a great old-fashioned picnic...always the best kind. Well, I'm bringing some egg salad sandwiches. The egg salad will be packed in a small tupperware dish so that the sandwiches can be made up fresh. I'll probably also bring some good old-fashioned Hermits since they pack and carry so well.

You're really going to do a tutorial on the men's shirt apron? Oh wow! I am so excited about that I can't begin to tell you.

Say, is it just me or are things really taking off over here? Yay! :D

Anonymous said...

Ok, for my contribution to the picnic, I am going to bring the FRIED chicken, not baked, not skinless, but go old fashioned rolled in that good eggy buttermilk wash and dreged in flour/cracker crumbs/crushed potato chips with all the spices from the cabinet that I remember my mom making.

Nan said...

I am bringing a marinated vegetable salad...good and cold for a hot summer picnic! I would love to win an apron! I've been wanting one LOTS!!

Unknown said...

Wow! What a walk down memory lane! We would have a family reunion of sorts with my dad's family and meet in a small town convenient to everybody, since we were scattered across Texas. There was a nearby park with one of those twirly, run-and-jump-on contraptions and the longest, burn-your-legs-by-the-time-you-reach-the-bottom slides. Along with some yummy fried chicken, deviled eggs and sweet tea! Congrats on SITS! Love the blog!

Great photos! I love your blog!

I have a *strawberry-pretzel recipe - it has smushed frozen strawberries, suspended in strawberry jello, over a smushed pretzel/sugar/butter crust. Is that it?
I'm bringing tortellini salad to the picnic. Cheese tortellini, cubed salami, cubed mozzarella cheese, red onion, seeded and cubed tomatoes, and black olives, in an olive-oil/oregano/basil vinaigrette!

Mamahut said...

OOOh, I got the watermelons, you can't picnic w/o a watermelon.

I have 3 of those old picnic baskets,,I uhm have an obsession for picnic baskets. If I had the apron I could put it all together, and pretty up the winerack. Love your blog!

EmBee said...

I too have the 'Strawberry Pretzel Jell-o Salad' recipe. With the cream cheese and whip cream center, pretzel sugar and butter crust, topped with strawberry jell-o with strawberries suspended in it. If you'd like the recipe you can e-mail me at thepapertreehouse@comcast.net.

As for my contribution to the picnic... Hmmmm? I immediately thought about potato salad and then worried about the mayo getting to warm and making everyone sick... That would be a tragedy, especially with a group of brand new friends. So put me down for 'Cowboy Caviar' served with a basket of tortilla chips, lined with a red bandana to carry out the theme.

Unknown said...

I would love to join your picnic and I want to bring real old-fashioned homemade banana pudding.
It even has the meringue on top.

I want to subscribe too. Can you add me?

Thanks for the invite! I'm bringing old-fashioned, ooey, gooey, chocolate chip cookies. Yummy!

I think I will bring som celery filled with peanut butter and raisins.

I believe this is the recipe you are looking for:

Strawberry Pretzel Salad

Step 1:

2 cups crushed pretzels (I use my Minnie chopper but you can also put pretzels in a sealed zip lock bag and roll over them using a rolling pin, a glass, or a can of green beans.)
¼ cup sugar
1 ½ sticks melted butter

Step2:

8oz cream cheese-
1c cup sugar
2 cups Cool Whip

Beat together and pour over cooled pretzel mixture.

Step 3:

2-10oz packages frozen strawberries-thawed
2 cups pineapple juice
1 large strawberry Jell-O

Heat juice on medium heat and dissolve Jell-O-add strawberries and pour mixture over cream cheese mixture and chill for at least 2 housrs.

This sets faster in a metal pan (9x13 cake pan)

I love the old pictures. I have *got* to figure out how to use my scanner...and then I need a few weeks on my own to get all my parents pictures into the computer.

I'd love to come to the picnic. I just got a picnic basket at Target. Not that we go on any picnics...but it was cute...and maybe we will now. I think I'll just bring some ham and cheese sandwiches...it's easy, and it's what my kiddos would eat.

Apple Joos said...

Ooooh! I would like to bring the perfect pie to the picnic. I realize you're still looking but I'd love to know what has been the closest to perfect so far!

I have a Strawberry Pretzel Dessert recipe that is scrumpdillyicious if you'd like it. I am glad you reminded me since strawberries are in season right now. Let me know if you want it.

When I see old fashioned picnic baskets I think of a book I read when I was a kid. It was a Raggedy Ann and Andy book at my grandma's house. And it reminds me that any good picnic always has a tall chocolate layer cake, packed whole, unpacked in one gorgeous piece - no matter where you are, and then sliced perfectly so all of the layers are clearly visible. To fulfill this requirement of a perfect picnic, I will make my family recipe of Black Magic Cake, moist and rich (there is cocoa and coffee in the batter), with a rich espresso frosting. The cake will be 4 layers, so nice and tall, and will be served with whipped cream, fresh from our little farm.

Mmmm, all of these dishes sound so delicious. My Weight Watcher mouth is watering and wondering how many points a picnic like this might be...

This reminds me so much of growing up in the 50's in Rigby, Idaho. My Aunt/Uncle had a forest behind their house and we'd have family picnics in the "forest". I used to think it was so big but when I go there now it is just a little clump of big trees. Love the pictures. A wonderful time gone by. I hope those times still exist.

RoeH said...

Oh...I forgot...I have a wonderful spinach/chicken salad I'll bring. And I'll even bring the recipe.

I absolutely love that you hate potluck assignments. I always get so frustrated when people get so uptight about it. It is a picnic for Pete's sake, relax!

I am going to bring my mom's (and it was probably her mom's) family reunion rolls. It is a basic recipe that you can use for various shapes. We ALWAYS make crescents. Soooo yummy!

oh, yay, a picnic!!! I'm not new here but I don't think I've ever commented... I've been reading your other blog, "The Farmer's Wife," for a couple of years and came over here when you started up.

Anyhoo... I'll bring an extra quilt and some macaroni salad that I've been making for about 30 years... it's deelish!! See ya in a few!

"Knee high by the 4th of July..." that's what my mom always said! And I have no idea how she knew that, because she was a city girl. But a blueberry pickin' city girl.

They're dark chocolate brownies topped with mint frosting (think - like an Oreo) and chocolate ganache.

It's a good think they're virtual, because they are decidedly not good for you.

Those are such cool photographs (too many comments to wade though to see if you already answered); are they from your family or did you find them? I love old time photographs.

For the picnic, I would bring my pasta salad. I don't like most pasta salads, as they're too oily and slimy for my liking and just taste like bottled Italian dressing. The salad I make has roasted corn (roast on the ear, then cut off the nibblets), tomatoes, feta and all sorts of goodies that make it nice and tangy but oh so light and refreshing.

Now that I think about it, I may have to make some of this for a party I'm going to tomorrow.... YUM!

I'm bringing Potato Chip Cookies
(trust me, they're REALLY good)

1 cup butter
1 cup sifted powdered sugar
1 egg yolk
1 tsp. Vanilla
1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup crushed potato chips

Combine butter and powdered sugar in a large bowl and beat with an electric mixer on med. speed for 3 min. Add egg yolk and vanilla, beat until well mixed. Then gradually beat in flour. Stir in the potato chips with a spoon or spatula.

Drop by teaspoon fulls onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes. sift with powdered sugar while they're still warm. Makes about 40 cookies.

If you don't tell people what they are until they try them, then they'll be gone in minutes. If you do tell them, you'll end up with all the cookies for yourself ;)

I Love that apron Suzanne! I can't sew, so I HAVE to win :)

hugs,
rue

How cute. I think I know some of those women in the photos. They look like my relatives back in Alabama.

I love the apron! I use one every day when I cook dinner!

I am the meatball girl at work. I make a mean sweet and sour meatball recipe that I am constantly asked to make (from scratch no less) for work parties.
