Fall in the Midwest

Fall is well upon us in the midwest and harvest has yet to begin in earnest.

Some of the farmers have started harvesting soybeans but the corn is not yet ready. The moisture content must be at a certain level before the big push begins.

During that time you will see the combines out in the fields late into the night and grain trucks parked at the edge of the fields.

This is a photo I took a couple of years ago. The scene doesn't change much, one year it's corn and the next year it's soybeans. I was standing at the top of a rise in the landscape, at the edge of the small village cemetery, facing north. Unfortunately all the land between this vantage point and that farm has been sold off to developers. The current state of local real estate means that it will be a few more years before homes replace the crops.

Until that time I'll enjoy the beautiful view.

Looks just like Iowa where I grew up. You're right... the scenes do not change from year to year. Always very pastoral.

Looks like you have been taking pictures near Pothole, Ohio.

I love those fall nights driving down our rolling roads beside miles of fields; watching the light in the corn as the combine works. Funny too, we always laugh because around here it's not uncommon to see combines for sale at the side of the road. How many city people driving by have a use for a combine?

So beautiful! Reminds me of our trip through Missouri to Iowa last year...

This looks just like what I've always thought Iowa would look like.
It's sad when homes and businesses replace such lovely land....a sign of the times, I guess...

Hmmm, what delightful views they are, too. I love the golden quality of the first photograph. Have you framed any of these?

That's one thing we had to adjust to when we moved from northern Indiana to western Kentucky - the corn is harvested before the soybeans down here. We got used to corn harvest up north in late October and into November. But down here, they start on the corn in early September and by now, almost no corn is left in the fields.

It's still "wrong" in my mind...LOL! Maybe in another couple of years, it will seem normal.

A beautiful view indeed. It always saddens me to see a bunch of houses where open space used to be. Even though I live in the desert and things are pretty scrubby, I still love to see the open space and am sad with each section that is turned into a development.

I love the light on this picture.
