The Way Back Machine

Photobucket

The time: May, 1948
The place: Great-grandma & great-grandpa's place in Nippersink, Wisconsin

This is my mom, standing in front of my great-grandma & great-grandpa's small lakeside cottage near Nippersink creek in Wisconsin. It was a small white frame cottage built on a slope. The front of the cottage faced the road and was only one story but because of the slope down to the lake the backside of the cottage was two levels. I remember it being very small and you can clearly see in the photo that it's not much bigger than it's garage.

My uncle returned to the cottage a few years ago and was stunned. The tiny white frame cottage has been expanded to a large multi-million dollar lakeside home. He saw the bones of the original cottage and is very sure that it wasn't leveled but enlarged.

My mom looks very young in this photo. She already has one child and will have a second child in another year.

I'm not sure who was behind the camera but I love the use of negative space. It also proves to me that there's absolutely nothing like film.

Isnt it amazing how things change? I would much rather see a small, cute, quant cabin on a lake/creek/river than a huge home... It really ruins the landscape of the area. Your mom is PRETTY! So thin - her little waste makes me SO jeaolous. My granny says that the dress's they wore made their shapes look beter because the were well fitted.... :)

Ok, in the South we have some pretty fun place names...Wetumpka comes to mind, for example, but I've always thought those in the northermost states were really fun names. Probably because I'm not familiar with them. Nippersink, indeed.

And what a wonderful picture. It gets everything important in the frame, doesn't it?

Your mother is so cute all dressed up...love her shoes. Did you have a photographer in the family? I ask because you have such a good selection of vintage family photographs. Our family had a collection not so good vintage photos. :D

Funny that the new owners would've built all around the smaller cottage. Did your uncle take a photo of that?

I know it is the perspective, but the car looks bigger than the house! Thanks for sharing. Your mom looks lovely!

I love looking at old family photos and seeing how much things have changed and family memebers when they were so young, it really is like going back in time.

I bet they'd be amazed at the value of that property today! I know that there are folks here on the lake who bought in the 50s and 60s. I'm sure the price then seemed like a lot but that investment has sure paid off. blessings, marlene

I love these pictures of your mom when she was young, like the picture of her and your dad on the road. She looks as cute as a button, and beautifully trusting.

Oh, old black and whites... I've scanned so many of them since I am the keeper of the old family photo albums. Have seen them so many times that I think I have the black and the white ones etched in my brain. My favorite lake name where I grew up in Iowa is Lake Okoboji. Lots of old Indian names there. Your mother is lovely... she appears to be about my mother's age at that time. Thanks for sharing this!

I love her shoes and that little cottage needs me. Not as much as the old farmhouse, but still.

I love this photo. I don't really know you and definitely not your mother, but this photo has such a warm feeling, like it is someone who is dear to me.
