Monday Morning Staff Meeting

Is it Monday morning again? Where does the week go? I got some things done this past week but hardly a dent in my "to do" list. That list seems to be growing as we speak.

The powers that be have informed the Farmer that this coming Friday is his last day. He has other irons in the first but first we're going to get away for a week or so. It's just one of those situations when you just need to clear your head before diving into the next challenge. We'll be going away but certainly not to any exotic location. We're just going to hole up and vegetate!

I didn't have time to bake so I let Walker's do it for me. I snagged a box of individually wrapped Walker's Shortbread cookies. These are fantastic. I've never been able to make homemade as good as these. Buttery richness and crunchy!

You'll also find coffee, milk and juice. Help yourself!

Are you crafty? Do you sew, crochet or knit? Would you like to help others? Check out something called CRAFT HOPE.

They offer crafters a chance to get involved and help others. The latest project is creating Sock Monkeys to be donated to the Firefighters Burn Institute in Sacramento, California. Sept. 25-27 the institute is holding a camp for children and their families called Little Heroes Preschool Burn Camp. The deadline for Sock Monkeys is Sept. 18th.

For more information, check out CRAFT HOPE or the CRAFT HOPE NEST which is the place for tutorials and ideas for the projects.

My nephew and his family are slowly making their way in China. Let's just say, "You ain't in Kansas anymore, Dorothy." Katie reports that the sounds and smells are so different that it's disconcerting. But there is a Starbucks in Hangzhou and they rode in one of these motorcycle cabs to hunt it down.

After much confusion they found it and upon entering the doors Katie felt like she'd found a bit of home. She says that just the hint of a familiar odor (coffee brewing) was comforting to her.

Coffee brewing is high on my list of things that smell like home.

When's the last time you read a Nancy Drew mystery? I picked one up at a garage sale. It's dated 1980 and titled The Secret in the Old Lace.

I'll have to admit it's pretty lame. Maybe the older Nancy Drew's are better. I do remember that I enjoyed reading them. I guess this is one thing that just doesn't age well.

When's the last time you read Nancy Drew?

Dale Challenger is once again hosting the remembrance project for the victims of 9-11. I participated the first time he did this three years ago and have posted a remembrance for my assigned person every year since. It's a wonderful project, lest we forget. Go to the Project 2,996 websit, leave him a comment saying that you would like to write a tribute. He will assign you a name. You research the person and write a tribute to them on 9-11.

We should never forget that these were someone's spouse, brother, sister, mother, father and neighbor. We should always keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

OK, this is a short meeting but my energy is flagging and the shortbread doesn't seem to have helped me.

Anybody got any pressing issues they'd like to discuss?

Nancy Drew was my favorite!!! I think that our minds are so used to action packed into every moment that our minds have forgotten how to make a story better in our minds... :)

thanks for the shortbread - they were awsome!

I remember that Nancy Drew Title. This brings back memories of reading late into the night as a girl. I literally had to use a flashlight under the blankets sometimes because I just couldn't put the book down.

It has been too long since I have read a Nancy Drew Mystery. Indeed.

Have a great week!

I belonged to a Nancy Drew book club when I was a kid. I still have those books and I still read them! I have also been know to ask one of my daughters to check out Nancy Drew books from the school library for me. They have a wonderful collection of the old ones. The new ones are nothing compared to the old, original stories.

I'm somewhat crafty--I quilt a little, sew, knit and occasionally do some other crafty thing. I'll check out CRAFT HOPE and see what's going on. My quilt guild makes quilts for giving to those in need. We've given some to the Veteran's home in our town, fire dept., women's shelter, etc. It's fun getting together with the group and work on projects for others.

My daughter (26 now) pulled out an old Nancy Drew and it's around here somewhere for me to read next. I read them all the time growing up. BTW, I took your suggestion and I'm now reading To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time. I'm about halfway through and I'm loving it!

Enjoy your R&R next week and good luck to the Farmer in his next challenge. My husband's working-at-home venture is doing well so the lay-off last spring hasn't been too traumatic.

This is getting long and must go anyway. Going to the Frist (in Nashville) today with my children to see the latest exhibits.

Thanks for the shortbread!

Love Nancy Drew.....bought the whole set (in installments) at Sam's Club about 10 years ago....hoping that someday I would have a granddaughter to share them with (now I have 3!!!)
I did read a bunch of them at the time....like you, I thought they were lame.....but enjoyed the trip down memory lane. My favorite was "The Secret of the Old Clock".
BTW....there is *nothing* better than shortbread with a good cup of tea! Thanks for providing us with some!

I remember reading that Nancy Drew book, they were so good back in the day. I work in an elementary school and try to get the girls to read them, but for the most part the girls of today don't care for them.

I loved Nancy Drew! The old, original books were the best. Nancy was so ahead of her time. An independent girl with independent female friends, capable of doing bold and logical things. I read a whole slew of the books. Every single one kept me glued to the pages till the very end!

I read every Nancy Drew book there was in my elementary school library. After I finished with her, I read all the Hardy Boys books. I still have about 13 Nancy Drew books now. I even have some of the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys combined mystery books.

I read two Nancy Drew books two years ago when Naomi wanted a Nancy Drew birthday party. I needed ideas for the mystery the girls would solve. How disappointing to find that the books I had loved were so lame and formulaic! (Even the old ones were like that. One of them I read was the very first Nancy Drew book.) They're perfect for a certain age, stage, and reading level, though. When I was 8, I wanted to *be* Nancy Drew! It's easy to see why I had graduated to Agatha Christie mysteries by the time I was 10, but I'll always feel a little nostalgic about Nancy Drew. Na is past her Nancy Drew stage now, and while the Hardy Boys went in the garage sale, I couldn't bear to part with the Nancy Drew books.

My thoughts are with you and the Farmer, and beginning anew; and with your nephew and his family, trying to make a home somewhere that is so not home.
I remember exactly when I was first introduced to Nancy Drew. My mother's cousin had the whole set and she gave them to me when I was about 9 or 10. I was so thrilled to have an entire BOX FULL of books to read. I think, by halfway through the series, I was not so impressed, but I've found that with other long series as well. It just becomes the same story over and over. Still, Nancy and her friends were excellent role models and good stories for the age I was at, when I read them.

I loved Nancy Drew, but I haven't read one since around 1982.

I love to craft and sew...
