Do Housecats Eat Cake?

Do you have any mysteries in your house that defy explanation?

On Tuesday evening I hosted dessert for some of my friends in the neighborhood. Once a month we get together and meet at a local restaurant for dinner. After dinner we gather at someone's home for dessert and it was my turn to serve as hostess. I'll share photos and a recipe in the near future but right now I'm wondering if housecats eat cake.

I baked two pound cakes, a sandcastle cake as a design element for the table (to be eaten later) and a loaf style pound cake which was for slicing and serving. It was late when the ladies left and I put everything away except for the sandcastle cake. I left it at the center of a dining table. The nearest chair was sitting about 2 feet from the table which would rule out a snatch-and-grab by the Chihuahua's. Pancho is especially known for his table hopping, dinner stealing antics, but the distance between the chair and the table is beyond even his considerable talent.

This is the scene:

My CSI skills say that there's only one culprit that can be the perpetrator. Sparky the cat. And then I remember that this morning I found a pile of kitty gack on the carpet. It was the color of his dried cat foot but it certainly could have been mixed up with Sandcastle cake and brown sugar sand.

BUT.....I on the other hand I can''t rule out the tag team possibility. This has been known to happen before. The dogs bribe the cat with promises of future favors. In return the cat bats food off the table and they scramble around and gobble up the evidence. They're a sneaky bunch I tell you.

Dang. If it's not one animal creating chaos around here it's another or a combination of all three. The animals seem to have picked up where the kids left off.

So what nonsense have your pets been up to lately? I'll venture a guess they haven't chowed down on a Sandcastle cake!!!

Yes they do eat cake. Our cat has been known to do the same thing. Shiloh is the one that does the stealing now though. I left a box of pizza on the counter one day and went to do a load of laundry before we ate and I came back to a empty box and a very happy pup. I swear he was smiling.

Have a great day!

rue

I found my cat sitting right in the middle of the table eating my rose when I got home yesterday. I was unimpressed. I imagine that you're not as impressed as you sound with those smart pets of yours. :D

That is so funny... Cats are sneaky... When my oldest daughter just started walking I didn't want her to get hurt by the Christmas tree ornaments... so I made a bunch of beautiful ginger bread cookies... and hung them on the tree... the next day I woke up to a bunch of half munched cookies...Our cat Bullet (daugter of chainsaw...he he he) had bitten the TOP of every cookie... so they all fell of the tree... She never confessed... but she had a twinkle in her eye :)~

I don't know if they eat cake, but mine sure eats everything else. When we took her to the vet for her 1-year checkup, she was so fat that the vet exclaimed: "Wow, she looks like she ate another cat!"

Mary
btw, the greater mystery to me is: "What crazy woman has the time to make a sandcastle cake?" I salute you, Suzanne -- you are truly a Superwoman!

I don't blame them. It looks delicious!

Yup. Yup. Yup.

The cat here is not only in cahoots with the dog (knocking things off the countertops but also quite adept at kicking over the garbage can in the kitchen).

She has eaten:
The entire top off a loaf of fresh Italian bread.

Tomatoes. My tomatoes often have fang marks in them.

Canteloupe (go figure).

beef, chicken. She will not touch fish or shrimp (odd cat)

She absolutely LOVES it when I forget to put a stick of butter or margarine away.

Yup. Worse than the kids.

Ouch , that was a cute cake .
I've never had a cat so I have no clue if they eat cake or not but I sure know Peekingese do.

We had to stop putting our snacks in our lower cabinets.
My peek loves any kind of sweets and learned to help himself . He would would come running into the kitchen and jump at the cabinet door while twisting himself towards his side body slamming the door untill it popped open .
(we can't leave chairs near a table either ... he's like having a permanent 2 year old in the house )

Cats eat everything! Ours liked green beans. Our brittany decided to jump up on the cabinet one day and help herself to a fresh warm batch of chocolate chip cookies when I left the kitchen. I'm surprised she didn't come down sick. Our chihuahua ate a box of Valentine chocolates, too, that she managed to open. A small box - whoa - did we have doggie-doo all over the place for a couple of days.... 'nuff said. Vickie
