About that Tablecloth

I'll have to admit that I do not have Olympic fever. Somehow I'm not on board for watching two plus weeks of sports. Perhaps an overdose of the Golf Channel is to blame. (The Golf Channel is on every waking moment that the Farmer is in residence.)

We did watch the opening ceremonies which could best be described as fantastic and over-the-top. It's apparent to me that I have no clue where many of these nations are located. They've all been renamed and split up and reconstituted. I feel like a geography dummy after this evenings Olympic ceremony.

I have no business commenting on fashion, Olympic or otherwise. But I will say that I loved some of the ethnic costumes featured in tonight's parade of the athletes. The south sea islands and African nations really had some beautiful garments. The Farmer and I were interested to see the Nigerian delegation.

A little over a year ago we found ourselves staying for a night in a hotel in North Miami. This hotel was literally a mini United Nations. When we first arrived we met up with Haitians in the parking lot.

Just inside the front door we encountered a Bridezilla and her very quiet groom. Talk about fire breathing dragons!!

Moments later we discovered the hotel was hosting a large gathering of Nigerians who were partying and simply looking fabulous.

The men's outfits were made of very gorgeous embroidered cut work. The Farmer thought they looked like tablecloths. Unfortunately I wasn't able to snap pictures of the huge and elaborate head pieces (hats?) worn by the women but they all looked fabulous.

After the Nigerians headed to the ballroom some lovely young Cuban women walked through the lobby on their way to South Beach to party. They were dressed to the nines.

Speaking of tablecloths, a note to the Hungarian Olympic team; my grandmother called, she wants her tablecloth back.

Funny post. I was thinking the same thing last night. But it was so fun to watch. I do have a bit of Olympic fever. I love sports and it's fun to sort of get sucked into it all.

I looked forward to seeing the opening ceremonies...but 17 days of sports? I will be relying on Netflix and Turner Classic movies. Gymnastics will be the exception, though. And the 40+ year old American swimmer.

Your post is the first I've read of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Let's just say that I beat you in the "don't have Olympic fever" category.

Well...since SwimBoy is a competitive swimmer and long distance runner we will be totally glued the olympics. He just found the interactive feature on Dish so he's definitely hooked! I agree about the Hungary dresses -- OMG, my eyes are still burning!

LOL! I was wondering why that man was wearing his mama's moomoo! LOL! To each his own, I guess. I there are lots of different and interesting things about people from other countries.
I missed the opening ceremony for the Olympics, but I doubt I will watch any of it anyway. Oh well.

The commentators definitely spent quite a bi of time, talking about the Hungarian team's uniform. You certainly couldn't miss them :-)

The ceremony was certainly awesome. The lighting of the torch was really something.

Won't be glued to the TV, watching all of the events though. maybe some of the gymnastics and possibly any events that ay show the Kiwis in action.

Love the wedding photos and your comments about them. It's fascinating watching people, isn't it !!

I'm coming out of hiding to say I just am so not into the Olympics. I wish we could channel this much enthusiasm into our school system or feeding the starving in our own country or any of the countries participating. Health care? Or in the countries hosting why not spend that money on infrastructure?
Ok, I'm over myself now. Happy weekend.

Hey, the Hungarians are my peeps! At least, I'm one quarter Hungarian so I feel the need to defend them a little... but as I didn't actually see the Opening Ceremonies I should probably just keep my peace...

Yep, I don't have Olympic fever either, although one of the women's soccer players is from my home town,
xoxo,
Mary

I love this post!

1) The tablecloth of your grandmother's is too funny.
2) Your appreciation of Nigerian clothing.
3) Why would anyone want to be glued to the television for two weeks straight in the first place, LET ALONE to watch sports? We don't have time for that. I wish I could see some gymnastics on my schedule, but that isn't going to happen.
