The Corn Drops at Midnight

Our neighbors were originally from Long Island and were raised on the New York city tradition of the ball drop in Times Square. It was something they missed and in an attempt to capture the spirit of the ball drop celebration they came up with the Corn Drop.

An ear of feed corn is the iconic symbol of Illinois and lends itself to a decent representation in chicken wire and lights. Well, there is the soybean, but a soybean drop just wouldn't have the same effect.

The official Corn Drop party involves a lot of food. Lets's see, there's artichoke dip, mini crab cakes, corn salsa and much more!

My favorite bartender is behind the bar.

The fabulous Mr. Ed.

We engaged in lots of animated storytelling.

The children fail in their attempts to stay up until midnight.

Shortly before midnight we all grabs our coats and linger in the kitchen for a moment to discuss the weather.

Other neighbors who are hosting their own parties arrive in a convoy just before midnight to witness the corn drop.

A group of about 50 people congregate in the brisk air.

The corn is high above the crowd on a pole.

The countown commences......three, two, one.......

Happy New Year!!!

Thanks for joining us here in the great American midwest for our homemade celebration!!!

P.S. For years we've been attempting to contact David Letterman's "people". We'd love to invite David's mom to our celebration. If you know them, please contact me. Thanks!!!

"The corn drops at midnight" sounds like a super secret spy code to me! Luckily I was able to break the code; it means "Here's a fun and unique way to celebrate the new year!" I wanna come next year! If I had people, I'd have them call David Letterman's people! He'd love this! I can just see his mom reporting back to Dave! Happy New Year, Suzanne!

How fun was that?! Much better than Times Square. I can say this because, wonder of wonders, we actually stayed up until midnight!

The little girls on the sofa fast asleep are so sweet.

Happy New Year to you and yours, Suzanne!

The year my husband and I were engaged, we decided to go down to Underground Atlanta for the New Year's Eve festivities. We parked our car and rode the Marta train downtown. We were litteraly press against perfect strangers in a tangled mass of mostly intoxicated people. We have opted to spend every New Year's Eve since at home or with family.

The Midnight Corn Drop sounds like a wonderful way to usher in a new year.

PS I have the gingerbread dough on the counter thawing... wish me luck!

Happy New Year, Suzanne! I LOVE the corn drop, and yes yes yes, David Letterman needs to know about this! I say we all start a campaign to inform him, don't you think? I also love how all your neighbors stop by to witness the spectacle -- now that's community at its best!

We love New Year's Eve, and also celebrate with a special group of lifelong pals. This year, our best friends got a Wii, of all things, and we laughed like crazy while everyone watched ME "bowl" with the Wii controller. Talk about a spectacle ...

Lastly, thanks for your nice comment about the Wright house essay on the CS Monitor. I left you a response on my blog.
