In Dry Dock for Repairs

Previously on "At Home..." I related the story of nearly puncturing my lung due to a undergarment malfunction.

Well, the undergarments are at it again. A while back I purchased a very expensive, good quality engineered support system. I was more than I'd ever spent for a item of clothing that would never see the light of day. But I have come to the conclusion that there's not a bra out there that can contain a piece of wire determined to escape.

It was obvious that no amount of pushing and lecturing would coax the wire to stay in it's place. I put the bra into dry dock and made plans for a repair.

I found a sturdy piece of fabric and cut a small patch. Working with tiny pieces of fabric isn't the easiest chore but many hours of sitting with my grandmother stitching small embellishments on hats gave me the necessary skills.

Using a piece of stong quilting thread I made tiny stitches all around, covering the hole in the trim that allowed the wire to escape.

We'll see if this patch holds. I certainly wouldn't want to get stabbed while dancing on my upcoming cruise!

Or have a wardrobe malfunction either! LoL! I hate how those wires dare to pop out! And it is never a good time that they choose to do so~ Sounds like you got it covered though-good luck with that and have fun at your cruise!!! Bring back photos to share! ~Smiles~Tam!

why wear wire? say that three times real fast. The only wire I've got is down in the chicken pen. :-)

Do you put your bras in the dryer? That will damage not only the elastic, but the wiring. I always hang mine to dry and they last much longer and function much better. Never had a wire go 'boing' on me yet.

I always say, "they can put a man on the moon with the greatest space suit, but they still can't make a bra to fit a woman."

Wow! If a farmer's wife can have a wardrobe malfunction then there's hope for us all! I thought only hollywood elite were allowed...

Can't wait to hear about the cruising and dancing!

I agree - why do we need the wire? First thing I do is make a tiny snip and out comes the wires - which are more like car springs :-) and I find the fit and support just as good - and nothing to stab at me when I least suspect it.

I always have the same problem... now about this CRUISE (as my ears perk up...) Where ya going? Which line?

No underwires-they are uncomfortable, expensive and last just as long as comfortable bras with nonunderwire support!

I just pull them out.....wish I could find a creative way to recycle underwires.....

So funny you bring this subject to light, so many times at work my co-workers (all women) and I walk around grabbing at our bras and re-arranging while in motion across the floor, if we catch each other doing this we just smile and nothing more needs to be said..we just KNOW how it is!!! Do they make bras that do their job without wire?
Thanks also for your comment in my blog, it's true about moving from one state to another can be like moving from one country to another...especially Texas. We lived in DFW and San Antonio and I spent a brief time in Austin..such different places!! That is why positive attitude is the key, it works anywhere!!!!!

Well look at you, all handy like! My underwire breaks in half, and that's a piercing experience.

That's a good remedy...I just take a small snip and pop those struts out, but the support goes, too, I suppose. I'll try your method next time.

If it works, let me know and I'll send you two or ten of mine to fix : )

While I understand the need for the support at my size and age, I still hate the darn things! If I hadn't seen breast reduction surgery on TLC, and if it didn't cost a million bucks, I'd probably have that done. Well, then there's the pain to deal with after surgery, and the lies you have to tell because who's going to go around saying "I'm having breast reduction surgery" to all their friends knowing all the time they will all tell their husbands and neighbors. There's that. blessings, marlene

That's funny, I just attempted a similar patch! Stupid underwire decided to escape and climb out of my sweater via the cleavage/vee neck ... while I was making a presentation for an important funding proposal. I couldn't figure out why everyone kept staring at my chest ... I'm not THAT endowed! Why oh why do wardrobe malfunctions happen in public places? I'd do without the wire, but my girls are getting a bit more "south bound" than I'm ready to display publicly - I save that for the privacy of my home and the comfort of my jammies!
