There are parts of the country that have us beat but yesterday morning it was 22 degrees below zero and that was without add the wind chill factor. It's dangerously cold and many, many vehicles would not start this morning including several of ours and our neighbors.
Caution must be taken when driving the back roads because if you get stranded you can quickly find yourself in a dangerous situation.
I did have to go out briefly yesterday and was stunned to see three people walking along the side of the road. One was only wearing a sweatshirt - no coat!!! It was a crazy sight but they were on a busy highway which made it almost impossible to stop. What were these people thinking? They were walking away from the county court house building and I know for a fact that public transportation is available from that location.
Back in the early 80's there was a similar cold snap that lasted for 21 days, if my memory is correct. At that time we were in our former home dealing with frozen pipes and an uninhabitable second floor. The two kids, the Farmer and our dog all shared a queen size hide-a-bed positioned in front of our fireplace. It was literally three dog nights with only one dog. Our furnace ran nonstop for four days and I was afraid it would blow up.
The weatherman promises temperatures in the 30's next week but I'll believe it when I see it. That will be a heatwave. Stay warm and safe everyone. The Farmer and I are looking forward to a cruise in four short weeks!

Springtime will be a great blessing. Here in Arizona, the cold snap has been wonderful. We do not get cold here very often. December was the coldest I remember. And we loved it. It finally *felt* like Christmas. 99 degrees is not fun on Christmas.
OHHH..a cruise..that sounds wonderful.
We are also in the deep freeze here...thankfully we are due to get out of it tomorrow and we are expecting temps in the 20's for the coming week.

-20 in Kalamazoo, MI not counting the wind chill this morning. I'm one of the insane people that loves winter and the cold. I whine incessantly when it's 80 and humid!
I can't beat you on the temperatures, but for GA it is mighty cold. Yesterday we had a high of 14, and a friend of my daughters showed up to school in a mini skirt, t-shirt and flip flops!!!
I can't even imagine temps that cold!! Bundle up! Think of warm islands and the hot sun on your skin.
Was the guy in a sweatshirt a teenager? I always tell mine to put a coat on and they always say no.
Here in KY we have been down to 2 degrees below zero and it is shocking for us. We too are looking forward to temps in the thirties today. The cruise sounds exceptional right now.

4 degrees here in Roanoke right now. WE won't be going anywhere today unless absolutely necessary. Even the dogs don't want to go outside.... you know it's cold when furry creatures can't stand it either.

I'm originally from Sycamore. My family lives in DeKalb and I just arrived back to the Kansas City area last Sunday after a week visit.
If it's any consolation, it's supposed to be 44 here today and that weather normally makes its way up to you in a day or so. While you won't see 44, anything over 10 will seem warm!

I remember those horrible days in the 80s...two years in a row, I believe. It was right through Christmas and the New Year. We were running two woodstoves and we had to hunker down just as you say...four to the bed and a cat. Cats aren't much help in the heat department.
Our pipes were frozen yesterday both here and at John's place...he spent the day thawing them and then doing some extra insulating. Ahhh, yes, good times.
If it's still cold there, I know that it will be cold for a while longer here, but I'm looking forward to those promised warmer temps, too.
I cannot imagine 20 below. Can't. Don't people without coat like that man die instantaneously. I'm dead just thinking about it.
... now quick, let me check the projected temperature here in Southern California... 70s. Blue sky.. Okay, I guess I'll dare a step outside.

That is miserable. It's too cold. We had a week in early January like that. Stay warm and dream of that cruise!
My husband remembered similar weather back in 1982 while living in Ky...our pipes froze...but knock wood, I've not had that problem here in Ohio.

Hey Suzanne; Oh my gosh, I really know how you feel, we are having the same very cold weather. The coldest it was here was -30 and windy. I hope it warms up soon.... Stay warm and safe..

"Uncle" here in Georgia, too. It wasn't 22 below, around 12 degrees--we are not used to such cold temps--
