Crazy Little Mysteries

One day I noticed a bicycle leaning against a sign on the side of the road not far from my house. It wasn't a terribly unusual sight because there's a small roadside restaurant to the left on the other side of the road. If I thought about it a little harder I would have realized that if the owner was stopping in for a hot dog they'd chain their bike up outside the restaurant and not across the road.

Every time I drove across this intersection I looked for the bike.

Yep, still there. One week. Two weeks. Three weeks. Four weeks. I lost count, it's perhaps five or six weeks now. The bike is still there. I'm sure in an urban area it would have disappeared in a day or so, the chain cut with bolt cutters.

I'm left wondering who left it there and why they haven't returned to retrieve it. We'll see if it's still there when the snow flies.

The really goofy thing is that today I spotted the bike and a short distance on the side of the road on the left was a big patio umbrella, fully extended, just lying on the side of the road. Now this isn't something that flew out the back of a truck fully extended. Is someone goofing on us? A bizarre art installation perhaps?

That is curious....I wonder what might turn up next?

You sure have your share of mysteries there. Fortunately for your readers, they are often solved. I'm thinking of the donut shop(?) that appeared in the farmer's field overnight. Say, there might be a novel in this.

Thanks for granting me a reprieve, my friend, I have laughed so much over that book. Do you think, as I do, that much of the language could've been left out without changing the storyline one whit?

I vote for bizarre art installation! Please share the next installments as they arrive.
Are you sure it doesn't belong to somebody who works nearby?
the plot thickens, keep us posted.

It is rather curious, isn't it? And now that you have all of us curious, you must be our investigative reporter at the scene :)

There you go....I would be out there investigating...looking for a body in the ditch......asking people nearby what they know. I love mysteries...

Did they forget how they got to the restaurant once they finished their pie, paid and went out the door? Maybe it was a trist, they arranged to meet some special friend there, and went home with them, forgetting to take the bike with them. Maybe it is a crime-scene-to-be... the sherrif put the bike there to try to catch the thief who has been stealing bikes all over the county. Inquiring minds want to know.

I have been watching the bike too. Let me know if you figure it out and I'll do the same. Could the elevator have blown in with the storm Monday morning? It was a humdinger

You know something? If the bike is STILL there I'd have to wonder if perhaps something happened to the owner. Maybe there's a missing person out there and if you report the bike to the police they might be able to connect it to the case. Especially since you live in a rural area. Maybe the owner went hiking and got lost or hurt.
