Something Cool and Blue for You

Are you burning up in your neck of the woods? The weather here has actually been quite lovely lately.

The thing about living in the north is that there are things that will grow in our zone that won't grow in the south. Peonies, for example, or foxglove. One of my favorites are hosta.

Here's something cool and blue for you.

Photobucket

It's a large (really large) hosta. If I remember correctly, it's an Elegans. See the martini glass? It's so that you can judge the scale. This hosta, depending on the weather conditions, grows each year from 6 to 8 feet across.

So, for those loyal readers who are plagued by heat, drought and crispy brown foliage, this one's for you!

Have you seen my Christmas in July post? I've grown afraid of our HUGE hosta! Yours is divine.

Who are you trying to kid? Someone had a few martinis, fell into the hosta bush, and is napping it off back there.

That is a beautiful hosta and I don't recall ever seeing one that color or with that leaf pattern. I truly love hostas, but have no clue where I'd plant one.

Do you have troubles with slugs or are they slug/bug resistant?

That made me laugh Vee! And I needed that this morning :)
I love hostas, especially that blue one. And someday I will find a spot for one. And peonies are one of my favourites.
It's not been hot up here. On the cooler side, and quite rainy. A bit more heat would be good, but it's hard to complain about the rain we so needed.

I've decided to carry a martini glass around with me at all times. "It's to provide scale" I'll tell everyone. "It's a Chicago thing."

Love the martini glass as an indicator of size. It's important to implement the proper tools when measuring foliage.
What a beautiful hosta it is!

Thank you Darlin'! Once again, I was up this morning at 5:30 watering with the hose.

Apparently, I'm doing it wrong and should have a martini handy.

Yours at the Menger,

Tess

Hey there.....those sure are pretty Hosta's. People here in South Texas try to grow them but they ALWAYS burns to a crisp. Love you martini glass.....great idea. Hopefully it was full prior to taking the pictures. :)

Fifteen years ago we left St. Louis (Des Peres!) bringing our hostas to Austin. Sadly, the southwestern weather didn't agree with them. Yours are beautiful!
